Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop
This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.
We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.
UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.
You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.
These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.
NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.
If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.
The Floppy Method
First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.
Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip
Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”
Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.
In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.
Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.
The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.
After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.
We recommend installing drivers in this order:
- Realtek HD Audio Driver
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Graphics Driver
- Atheros WiFi Driver
- Broadcom Ethernet Driver
- Launch Manager
- Touchpad Driver
- Acer Empowering Framework
- Acer ePower Management
Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.
The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.
We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
Internet and CD burner Method
The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.
First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)
Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\
Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.
Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.
On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”
On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.
On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.
On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.
Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.
After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.
On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.
Finally, click Burn.
Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.
Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.
Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.
Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.
Modifying the BIOS Settings
Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.
You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.
You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”
Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.
Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.
On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.
Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method
Modem Driver Installation
Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.
The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.
- Click on your “START” menu
- Right click on “My Computer”
- Click on “Properties”
- Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
- Click on “Device Manager”
- Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
- Click on “Update Driver…”
- Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
- Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
- Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
- In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
- Click on “Have Disk…”
- Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
- Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
- Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.
You should now have a working modem.
YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

Hey its me again…
After i installed some drivers that Alex didnt mentioned for the Crystal Camera ( and verry good he didnt ) i realized that a problem with my laptop appeard same as for the others… meaning laptop doesn’t want to shut down/restart/hibernate.. anything except if u unplug it. So after when i realized the problem i entered in My comp -> Manage -> and disable the camera. Now my laptop responds fine with the shut down/restart/hibernate problems. The drivers i installed were for win XP/VISTA… but i think there r only for vista that’s why i had that problem. How could those things interfear with eachother i have no ideea, but the drivers that worked from all (Bison / Chicony /Suyin) were Chicony.. what i mean by work is that the manager recognized them and installed them.. altough that didnt worked out fine.
What i think is.. that for the Crystal camera there r still no drivers for Win XP.
Regards.

Great tutorial. I upgraded my 5315 to Vista Ultimate. But, then it would hang on loading and I would need to reboot 2 or 3 times before it was usable. My wife also lost a document when it froze on her.
So, I dumbed down the Ultimate and now it works decently.
My question has to do with dual botting. I searched here but didn’t see anything about it. I would like to get a new HD, twice as big (or more), and transfer the Vista image (using Ghost) and then load XP Pro on a separate partition.
What do you think and do you have any recommendations before I start?
Thanks.

Aspire 5315 - 050508Mi - just to let you guys know - Did the procedure by the numbers and it went like a charm. The only thing I haven’t bothered checking is the modem side of things as I use the WiFi or the ethernet connection also no problem.
After everything was installed and working I did download the latest drivers from Intel - winxp_14331.exe - no problems encountered.
As one of you readers has already replied - was it worth the time and trouble - you bet it was.
Thanks for all you hard work Alex

Sweet - worked a treat…..thanks Alex for you work on this one…

I followed the instructions step by step with success. I used the nLite procedure to create a bootable CD with appropriate disk drivers. Also created a CD with all the other drivers. Only snag, the Agere modem driver loaded but did not function, so I used the Ambit modem driver http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/Modem_Ambit_v7.62.0.0_2C06_XP_WHQL.zip and that works fine.
I upgraded the BIOS from 1.29 to 1.34 , no problem encountered.
Recommendation : Follow the instructions to the letter, step by step. Do not improvise or guess. Just do what’s written, and you’ll be fine.
Now the question : was it worth the trouble? My answer is definitely YES.
My Vista ACER 5315 PC felt a bit like a PC for Noddy (nice bright colors, rounded boxes, superb icons, stunning - but pointless - visual effects, but all VERY sluggish). That PC felt “constipated”. Downgrading it (or better said Upgrading it) to XP leaves me with a nice, fast and reactive machine. A few figures : Initial boot was in the order of 100 seconds, now 20 seconds. Launch of Internet Explorer was 4 seconds, now 1 second. Launch of Excel 2007 was 4 seconds, now 1 second.
YES, for me, installing XP instead of Vista was a smart move, thanks to Alex Wells.
Note : My 5315 uses a 2 GHz Celeron with 1.5 Gb RAM.

@Jason
http://tinyurl.com/5wsygz for a CPU upgrade.
Google is your friend
I saw something on that site about changing out the HDD as well, but can’t find it just at the moment.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I sorta upgraded my hard Drive. I bought a new Toshiba 80GB to put Windows XP on. So now, if I ever need Vista again (God forbid), I can just pop in the old drive.
As for CPU, I just ordered the Intel Core Duo T2250 - 1.73GHz. I’ll have twice the processor I have now! I’ll say how it went after I install it.
Haven’t upgraded Memory from 1GB yet, put plan to do so.
Has anyone upgraded their CD Burner to a DVD Burner yet? I want to know how hard it is to do and if it’s worth it. I really need a DVD Burner.

Most of the drivers for the Acer Aspire 5315 located here ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/../notebook/aspire_5315/vista/Drivers work with vista, xp, 32bit and 64bit.
The intel chipset drivers and x3100 VGA drivers can be obtained from http://www.intel.com and the audio drivers from realtek etc.
Google is your friend people.
As for performance, windows xp totally rocks, vista is bloated and users way to much ram, even when I got 2 x 1024mb sticks of ddr2-667 for dual channel vista still sucked.
has any-one upgraded the HDD or CPU in this laptop?
May 31st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
patrick
soooo much faster
starts up in about 10 seconds and zippy zapps around.
This is with the 1.8 celeron and 512 ram.
well worth the swap esp since vista uses 400mb ram.
download drivers at the top, follow insturctions, works like a charm.
besides vista is total shit for dumasses.

Hi guys,
I own this laptop and had the fan problem as well. I remedied it with the i8kfan program I found here and that worked alright.
I recently flashed the BIOS to the most recent version and the fan problem is solved.
May 31st, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I followed this guide exactly and my installation of XP Home worked perfectly.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:30 am
Right, so we have all the ingredients here. But before I start messing around with my PC, can anyone who has done it (install XP on a 5315 instead of Vista) tell me what I can expect in terms of percieved performance? Is it really worth the trouble? Thanks in advance, Patrick.
May 31st, 2008 at 7:03 am
Hey are the above drivers fine and compatible with xp? It seems like theyre for vista. does it matter?
May 31st, 2008 at 2:19 am
Hi all. you can get the windows xp drivers from ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/../notebook/aspire_5315/
It is the acer ftp site. also lots of other things on there ftp for hundreds of products.
I am using windows xp pro x64 (64bit) perfectly.
Intel chipset drivers for x64.
Intel x3100 video card drivers for x64.
realtek HD audio driver for x64.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:29 am
Also, I just bought a 1.73GHz Core Duo Processor on ebay for $11.50. Great Dealz!
Hope to try and put it in when it gets here!
May 31st, 2008 at 12:24 am
I did the BIOS update to 1.34 in XP and all works well. The fan works right, too.
By the way a guy mentioned it a long time ago, but I figured out how to make the video better on the 5315. I dunno if anyone knows it, but in the Intel program that comes with the drivers for the video, which you get to by right clicking on the desktop and pressing graphics properties and is called “Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver”, Under the 3D settings tab you can change the Driver Memory Footprint to High and that will allocate maximum shared memory to the graphics when needed.
Hope I helped someone….
May 30th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
@ kefi - Not here… sorry. Maybe later we’ll try and drop x64 on one. for now it’s probably best to live with what you got (x32).
@ WwTIPPYwW - probably best to pull the physical modem if you’re not going to use it. they are small (size of a US quarter) and easy to find under the big cover on the back. check ebay for “acer modem” to see what they look like.
@ joe - does it work in vista? that USB port is actually connected to a cable, is it possible the cable was jarred loose in a fall? (well I know it’s possible, did it happen? heh)
@ stevenklby - aaaactually we do, Daniel’s been scooting it around a bit but it’s currently at the top right of the page. Any donations are much appreciated, us boys on the technological front-lines need all the help we can get!
@ everyone who mentioned the v1.34 BIOS… that’s great guys, I’ll drop v1.34 soon and see what it’s all about! for those who do not want to load vista just to do the flash, you could try running the vista flasher in WinXP but it seems like a lot of risk to me when there’s a DOS flasher in the same download! so grab the “vista” v1.34 download, unzip it and check the readme. See? there’s a pure DOS BIOS flasher, easy as pie. that also includes a binary file for the bios, so if you have a flasher that you know works in WinXP on these Acers, you could always flash the binary in WinXP with that. I haven’t heard about problems running XP on a v1.34 bios, but I haven’t exactly had my ear to the ground.
@ everyone posting thanks… a pleasure, as always.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Best wishes to the author!
May 29th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Thank You Thank You for this post the drivers and the steps above were perfect i installed Xp Pro in just under 15 minutes with no issues Thanks.
May 29th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Let me revise what I said. I’ve updated to 1.21. What is the highest update that allows Windows XP, because I’ve heard the higher ones do not support it.
May 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Awesome guide… Nice simple clean XP Pro install completed on a new 5315 picked up here in NZ for $520 (US$400). It’ll make an excellent little machine for our teenager off to university.
No problems at all with any of the drivers thanks to the initial work done by Alex, and to others who have since offered their time and experience. THANKS ALL!
May 29th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Can Someone please post how to Flash the Bios with the InsydeFlash? I have never updated the bios before and I want to go to whatever allows Windows XP Home w/ SP3.
May 29th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Anyone successful in running Windows 2003 Server on the Acer Aspire? I was able to use the CD method and get the OS installed and most all the drivers. But I was getting an unknown device and “modem device on high definition audio bus” drivers failing to install. I tried disabling the device in device manager, but every reboot it wanted to install the thing.

May 29th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Thanks Alex, whole thing worked perfecly, was unusable with Vista.
Got a paypal donate button?
May 28th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
2 aynshtayn> will my WinXP work fine? >
Will be fine, because BIOS update for Vista means that it have only update utility for Vista, nor BIOS binary file! BIOS binary file is independent of Operation system. You must only find corresponding to your operation system update utility - if you have WinXP, then update utility for WinXP ( eg, http://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/utilities/winphlash/ ), if you have Vista - for Vista.
May 28th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Hi!
I have a little problem: Acer provides the 1.34 BIOS update only for Vista. If I’ll update it to this version, will my WinXP work fine?
Thx for any advice! The overheating problem pisses me off…

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
mmm, all you need to take vista out is to have an modified XP kit, one wich microsoft does not provide it. I did that thing with the modified Xp about 10 times on 10 different computers (acer aspire, fujitsu siemens, dell) and none had any problems. But that drivers you have there helps me, i will try this next week with an acer aspire 5315 and i will let you know if it works with my modified Xp, but i am pretty sure it does.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:13 am

May 20th, 2008 at 1:38 am
MANY MANY THANS TO Alex Wells!!! it worked!!!
May 19th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
1) for those of you have the heating and fan problem, installing the acer ultility ePM will work. For those of you that didn’t worked, it may be the laptop problem.
2) After installing XP SP3, you will not be able to install sound card (Audio driver). So basically what you need to do is install all your drivers before you instal SP3. You can then apply SP3 after all drivers are installed.
3) Shut down problem, if you laptop is unable to shut down (staying at the shutting down screen forever), try installing SP3 and the problem will be fixed. But keep in mind my comment on number 2.

May 14th, 2008 at 1:31 am
Dear Alex,
Ihave the same problem as a few guys here, but I could not solve it in your way.
Data about notebook:
Aspire 5315
1. I installed XP Pro SP3 (maybe this is the reason).
2. I followed the sequence of drivers
3. No result, everything is working perfectly but the Realtek HD
Do you have any other solutions?
Thank you in advance for any answer!
With the kindest regards,
Robert

Alex,
Thank you for posting this valuable information. I recently purchased an Acer 5315-2077. I am not sure of the differences between it and the 2153, but it must be very close as I was able to get XP loaded unto it by following most of your directions.
The modem driver was especially important as I could not find it elsewhere.
Thanks again!

Hello,
I would like to thank you for the step-by-step instructions on how to install XP on this Acer 5315 (cheapest laptop I’ve ever seen in France €299 +€10 for delivery).
This “thing” is unusable under Vista but works like a charm under XP.
Thanks to you
Cheers
PS : Before handing over this PC to my daughter, I use it under GNU/Linux (Fedora 9 rawhide) and I must confess that the performance/price ratio is fantastic.

By the way, Service Pack 3 is now available (at least in Portuguese). I’ve done the update using windows update and it’s working fine on my Acer 5315-2142.

I tried this method with my Acer Aspire 2920-6549 and it works just great! Even some of the drivers are the same ones i needed, just had to download the rest from Acer support site. I had some problems with my USB floppy drive so I nlited my Windows xp CD and it worked. Thanks to everyone involved in this project.

@Cipi_frant
try using Intel GM965 Chipset Driver. you can find it at Intel site. mine is 5315-200508Mi and it use GM chipset not GL. and to make sure what chipset that you have, you can download a utility also at Intel site to check your chipset. hope it can helps.

to JLM, no a blue screen error is not common, and indicates anything from hardware problems, to driver problems, to anything else. Being that you have a different model laptop, you probably used an incorrect driver, which depending on what chipset your laptop has, can cause all kinds of problems and will be tricky to figure out.

This was very helpfull, especially slipstream drivers. I had the same problem with overheating and only thing that solve it was i8kfan and i had to put Power Management on Home/Office and changed timings like on Laptop/portable, cause when Power Management was on Laptop/portable computer worked slow for example when I listen mp3 and fan starts to blow song is slowing down. I solved it this way.

For comfortzone: Did you do the installation process as said on the top of this page or as Oli described in his post from March 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm?
In my case, I had to reinstall the whole OS and had to go step by step as Oli described in his post. After that, the audio was detected and now works fine.
April 29th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Hi, can anyone help me with installing XP SP 2 to Acer 4315. I have already installed the XP 2 but i cannot get the audio detected. The installation process went okay but during the process there is a message saying that installing realtek audio is a failure.
is the installation order for acer 5315 the same for acer 4315.
Pleaseeee helppp thank you
April 29th, 2008 at 8:04 am
I’ve had problems with the audio. With Oli’s (March 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm) solution it works now fine. Thank you very much Alex and also Oli for this site and all the remarks.
Now I’ve got a proper XP on this ACER 5315. You’ll get a Swiss Chocolate!

Graham, you should be good to go with XP Home…. feel free to report back with a success story or otherwise if there are any issues, but not sure if there will be someone on here who has tried and could help.
Cipi_frant, there are certainly a lot of comments, but we encourage you to use the “Find in page” feature of your browser (usually CTRL+F in windows-based browsers) to try and find what you’re looking for. To save you some time though, those issues don’t look familiar so they may be unique to your situation… We’re confident that if the directions are followed closely, perhaps coupled with some key comments earlier on in the thread, that everything should go smoothly. If it doesn’t, we may be unable to reproduce the issues and unable to come up with a solution…
For those asking about laptop models other than the Aspire 5315-2153, we probably don’t have those machines so we would be unable to test. Feel free to report though any progress with them…
Thanks everyone for contributing to the thread!

Gostaria de saber se essa instalação também é valida para o Acer aspire 5315-2013, ou se você tem a instalação pra esse laptop?
Desde de já muito obrigado.

Hello,
I don’t know if this issues were said before, but the readings will take to long.
I have 2 issues:
1. changing the video Memory: it can’t be done from Bios, it is very low, 10 MB, the video card is supposed to used up to 384 MB, using shared memory. If anyone know how to increase the memory please let me know.
2. The video driver coming on resource CD from ACER cannot be installed. The video card is from Intel GL960 chipset, I think 965 Expres Mobile. The error That I have is that the Laptop does not meet minimum requirements.
I have this issue on both XP and VISTA. If any one has any Ieda about this please let me know.
For faster answers please use my email adress: frant_c@yahoo.com.
Thanks.
