Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop
This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.
We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.
UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.
You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.
These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.
NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.
If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.
The Floppy Method
First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.
Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip
Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”
Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.
In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.
Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.
The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.
After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.
We recommend installing drivers in this order:
- Realtek HD Audio Driver
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Graphics Driver
- Atheros WiFi Driver
- Broadcom Ethernet Driver
- Launch Manager
- Touchpad Driver
- Acer Empowering Framework
- Acer ePower Management
Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.
The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.
We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
Internet and CD burner Method
The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.
First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)
Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\
Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.
Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.
On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”
On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.
On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.
On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.
Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.
After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.
On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.
Finally, click Burn.
Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.
Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.
Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.
Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.
Modifying the BIOS Settings
Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.
You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.
You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”
Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.
Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.
On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.
Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method
Modem Driver Installation
Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.
The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.
- Click on your “START” menu
- Right click on “My Computer”
- Click on “Properties”
- Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
- Click on “Device Manager”
- Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
- Click on “Update Driver…”
- Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
- Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
- Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
- In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
- Click on “Have Disk…”
- Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
- Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
- Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.
You should now have a working modem.
YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

I have removed Vista from my Acer Aspire 5310 and installed XP Professional and Sevice pack 2. All work fine and pretty fast with normal programmes. I want to use it with a datashow. I can see the second monitor in Dispaly - Settings, and I can set the external monitor to extend my Notebook LCD, so the driver seems OK. But I can not switch it to work as the primary monitor. Also the Function F5 key does not work in the way it should; ie switching on the datashow or external monitor; nothing happens. Function F6 works OK to switch off the notebook LCD. Is there a driver that is needed to make the Funtion F5 key work? Can anyone help on this? Have you guys got the Function F5 key to switch on the exteranl monitor OK; if so how?

@Alex or anybody that is willing to help
when i’m playing game (Warriors Orochi), my CPU temp is 60C. when idle it is 45C-55C. is it normal? usually, my desktop is only about 38C-45C. i use NHC to monitor the temp btw.
and bluescreen keeps occuring when i’m playing Warriors Orochi for about 30-90 minutes. the message is saying that i should allocate adequate disk space or i should check the display driver. it doesn’t happen when i’m playing Warcraft III : FT.
my notebook has 1GB RAM, 27GB free HD space. and i use display driver that i got from above link. could you please help me to figure out what the problem? thanx in advance and sorry for my bad English.

I have bought the acer laptop and have re-installed windows xp from the garbage system of vista.
Only problem I am having with this is that the USB device is saying that I am running it at USB 1.0. Is there anyway of fixing this problem?
I do have service pack 2 installed and made sure my chipset drivers are up-to-date.

lunn, Indonesia - I presume that ur wifi adapter is not set properly. try to use the option in command promt \i presume u are using Win XP\, start run, then type CMD
and then IPCONFIG /all. The response will be ur current wifi network settings. if there is 0.0.0.0 u should find all settings - ur ISP had to gave the settings somewhere and to input them manually.

lunn, Indonesia - try to open network Connections and then to enable WIFI, then u have to push the button with the satellite dish.. but first and most important thing is to see with device manager if u have any unrecognized devices - and do u have Atheros wifi.. with yellow question mark.. if u dont have that thing u have to try the upper procedure with enabling ur wifi adapter.

I have bought Acer aspire 5315 lately, I run XP profesional on it.. still the problems with cpu fan appears to be serious..I wanted to be sure about the fan.. so I took a flashlight and noticed that cpu fan works about 30 seconds, then it stop for a 10 seconds and then it repeat the “procedure”. My solution is a simple combination of external cooling pad\costs 10-20 USD\, of course I disabled Standby and Hibernation as options.. and my pc seems to work properly. It is amazing machine… I am using Everest Ultimate - diagnostic tool which has very precise temperature tool - so I can see what is happening.. Normally my hard disc works on 31 degrees Celsius, CPU Diode - 50-55 degrees Celsius and CPU - 50-55.

Could anybody tell me how to test my wifi to see if it’s worked?
It does show up in the tray. Does it means it is worked?
I’ve never use wireless connection before.
And what is this called “serial” thing in my device manager>non-plug and play drivers? Does anybody knows?
Sorry for the troubles and my bad English. Thanx in advance.

First, thanks to alex for this tutorial.
Mine is Acer Aspire 5315-200508Mi, i just bought it 2 days ago.
It came with Celeron 2GHz, 512MB RAM (Upgraded to 1GB), 80GB HD, Atheros Wifi, Agere Modem, Broadcom Ethernet.
I followed the tutorial, wiped out the Vista, installed XP SP2, used all drivers above, and all seem working fine except my Intel GMA’s AGP Texture Acceleration that is disabled in XP (in Vista, it is enabled). How can i make it enabled?
“standby problem” - i don’t install any acer stuff but use Notebook Hardware Control instead and the “standby problem” is not happening to me. and for Vista, the problem didn’t happen too even without NHC and acer stuffs. My BIOS is 1.29.
April 18th, 2008 at 7:54 am
Hey all,
I followed the internet/Cd method and upgraded my aspire 5315 to XP. However,as with many others, my Atheros wireless will not connect to any available networks it sees. It sits in the system tray with a red cross. My ethernet works fine. Pressing the radio buitton on the top of the keyboard does nothing!
Anyone have any ideas for me? I’ve read the comments and nothing has worked for me.
cheers,
Art…

If someone interested i have screen settings that i personally feel “eyes friendly” and pleasant; may give it a try :
1)
Open Intel Graphic application;
Click Color Correction;
Click Blue radio-button;
Pull the “brightness” slider down to -30;
Click Scheme Options, give it a name and save if you like it.
2)Added a Color Profile Kodak_dc.icc (copied from other computer):
Right click Desktop/properties/settings tab/advanced/color management/add/Kodak_dc.
Color is 16 bit, LCD brightness left on step4.
These gave me the ability of multi-hour yet sweet-tasted work.
Especially good at no-daylight condition.
Btw, it’s 5315-050508Mi model ICL50.

Marek,
Try cleaning out the cpu heatsink. I have to clean my every week or two to keep the temperature down.
April 9th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Hi All,
I solve a problem right now - I do not know why but the CPU temperature of my AcerAspire is usually about 60-66 degrees with no use of processor (0% usage). I suspect that it is caused by last bios updates since when I used the version 1.16 the temperature was usually about 45-50. Now the situation is the fan never stops - it only slows down/speeds up depending on current temp.
Does it happen to somebody else, too ?
Any suggestions why? It does not have anything to do with software installed since I get the same temperature values also in Linux (installed on second partition next to WinXP).
Thanks…

I bought a new Acer 5920 Notebook and installed XP. Everything was good except no sound. Followed your steps to install Realtek HD Drivers first before everything else and it worked just right.
Spent more then 12 hours in 2 days downloading and testing various drivers and finally your guide helped me out. You are my hero…God Bless!

Recently bought an Aspire 5315, reformatted it with XP right away, didn’t realise it would be such a pain.
Everything working well at last, tried epower to fix overheating, worked but such a resource hog. I8kfangui however was great, worked even better.

A quick note to people who are commenting with questions about laptops other than the Acer 5315-2153, for which this tutorial is written. Please note that you are taking a shot in the dark by commenting about things like that. Chances are, no one will respond because they probably don’t own that laptop and therefore would not be equipped with the tools to help. If they do respond, cool, but this tutorial is written with the 5315-2153 in mind.

After a few failed attempts to upgrade the CPU in my ASPIRE 5315, i finally got hooked up with some good info at the link i’ve posted.. anyway these 5315’s have a SocketP celeron processor. At first i ordered scoketM CPUs (my family has 3 of these 5315s), anyway when i got some good info i was able to upgrade to a CORE 2 DUO T5450. these cost $50 to $80 used on ebay, and if you check that link you will see that there are others who have upgraded to T7100, T7250, T7300 CPUs… just do your research ESPECIALLY if you are buying used off EBAY… i’ve had my CPU in for 6 hrs and i can honestly say the laptop is much more responive due to the TWO cores, and the SpeedStepping helps with cooling quite a bit too.
just a word of caution,, you will probably be vioding your warranty if you do this, but if you are careful you could easily change CPUs w/out acer knowing as long as you keep your old CPU just incase you need to send the unit in for service.
Cheers too all and it’s no longer april fool’s day and this is the god’s honest truth… see this link also:

Sir,
I have purchased Acer Aspire 5315-201G12Mi day before yesterday, i.e March 31st 2008 so I have tried installing Win XP Prof. SP-2 and since it did not boot from the CD (Win XP Prof. SP-2) I had to change the 1st. boot sequence to DVD Drive then it booted successfully but as the system copied all necessary files from the CD and begins to start Windows XP, but it fails to do so showing the reason, something like, can not detect the Hard disk.
Therefore, I have selected the bios setup to “IDE” mode instead of AHCI and then XP installed successfully.
However, installation of respective drivers started giving trouble again, as I see those drivers were meant for theVista not for XP.
So I have now found your website and gained enough confidence that at last I can probably make the XP running in this Notebook.
So please intimate me if your advise, above mentioned, is also applicable applicable for the Acer Aspire 5315-201G12Mi model as well?
Thanks & Regards,
Soumendra Nath Thakur

Again for sound:
if doesn’t works at first, sometimes it is enough just to restart TWICE instead of update driver after installing it.

For Vel :
try these screen settings:
Start intel graphic properties application; click on 3D; make following changes:
-depth buffer bit depth ->24bit;
-Force S3TC texture compression ->ON
-Force FXT1 texture compression ->ON
-texture color depth->32 bits per pixel
Check the image. These settings will give you a liitle less “crisp” and little more “vivid” and “fullnes”.

My Acer 5315 had the same overheating problem after I installed xp. Even after I had the ePower stuff downloaded frorm this page, the overheat-shutdown phenomenon persisted. This was particularily the case after standby. The fan control seemed working ok after it wakes up from hibernation, but after standby, the fan didn’t work, overheat, then shutdown.
Updating the bios to 1.33 didn’t fix the problem. BUT I fixed it with i8fanGUI.
Setting it to audomatic mode, fan just works fine after standby/hibernation.
Amazing thing is i8fanGUI can replace the ePower bloatware. I completely uninstalled the ePower thing, and left i8fanGUI alone do the job. Yes, it works!!!

Hi…
Interesting and usefull site, but I still have a problem with one driver on my Aspire 5315. I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, version 2002 and when I check my harware - device manager - it appears not working properly “Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family” which is version 7.14.10.1280. I searched on net newer version but i had no luck. Because of this problem, I can’t see, for example, a movie… using a player without no codecs - KM Player. The image appears on a corner of the screen. What solution do I have or will I find the proper driver?
Thanks,
Larisa

i’ve been running the 1.33 bios for 3 days now… i too wonder what was changed from the 1.32 version,, but because i have an upgrade CPU on the way i know it’s to my advanage to have the current BIOS which will have support for more CPUs than older versions of the bios..
those 2 .sys files didn’t seem to activate my CPU fan,, i removed them as soon as the temp hit 55c and resumed using the Dell fan control.
