Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop
This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.
We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.
UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.
You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.
These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.
NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.
If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.
The Floppy Method
First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.
Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip
Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”
Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.
In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.
Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.
The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.
After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.
We recommend installing drivers in this order:
- Realtek HD Audio Driver
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Graphics Driver
- Atheros WiFi Driver
- Broadcom Ethernet Driver
- Launch Manager
- Touchpad Driver
- Acer Empowering Framework
- Acer ePower Management
Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.
The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.
We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
Internet and CD burner Method
The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.
First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)
Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\
Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.
Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.
On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”
On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.
On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.
On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.
Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.
After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.
On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.
Finally, click Burn.
Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.
Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.
Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.
Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.
Modifying the BIOS Settings
Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.
You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.
You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”
Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.
Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.
On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.
Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method
Modem Driver Installation
Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.
The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.
- Click on your “START” menu
- Right click on “My Computer”
- Click on “Properties”
- Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
- Click on “Device Manager”
- Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
- Click on “Update Driver…”
- Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
- Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
- Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
- In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
- Click on “Have Disk…”
- Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
- Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
- Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.
You should now have a working modem.
YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

@Andres (he he he) Your right if you can use the whole disk size ,why should’nt you ,,I geuss ,I just figured ,to boot into that restore partition,, I’d leave it on there,,geuss you really don’t “HAVE TO” I could be wrong on this point ,,but I did’nt think the restore disk would reinstall partitions, and since this was my brothers computer,I wanted to be able to get it back to the factory state incase he would have some type of hardware related problem later,,that way “HOPEFULLY” ACER would’nt try to weasle out of the warrantee ,as he bought an extended warranty,,,sometimes OEM’s can get pretty petty about stuff like you messing around with their configuration ,,,ThaNKs AgAiN ,to everyone ,,,,,GOD BLESS

@Tim “the techman”:
Thanks! Just to ad to the partition topic, I did delete all of them. I figured, if I get 120gb I WANT 120gb It’s no big deal, before I formated the disc I made the recovery dvd’s (2) wich makes you able to reinstall Vista and all the other pre-installed software. I tried this for “fun” last weekend just to see what SP1 does to Vista(got a good SP1 copy..so why not I thought), good thing I had a image from my XP installation on the Windows Home Server! As you can figure it didn’t last long. Vista is “good” looking but stil not what XP offers. Maybe one day I’ll give it another try since there are more drivers (and Empowering stuff) for Vista.
Besides that it’s good to hear that everybody here was able to help

Howdy all ! First a shout out to ALEX ,,Thanks brother ! You made this so simple that,,just about anyone with a SLIGHT Knowledge of Windows operating systems, can “Git R dun” ,I used the “Internet and CD burner method” and was up and flying in about 2-3 hrs from Format to loading all the bare nessesities such as “AVG” “ADOBE” “JAVA” ,and all Windows updates ! Your Driver list is what makes this such a breeze ! A person could spend hours alone just “Googling” to find the Drivers for XP to get everything running and still not find them all (I DID !) so once again thank you ,thank you ,thank you ! OK now that I’ve said my peace on that ! Another shout out to “ANDRES” for the i8kfan exe ,which I found to be a requirement for proper fan operation to keep the sucka cool ,it works well with no tweaking, just install and let it do its thing ! I had the 5315-2153 model and used XP “HOME” w/sp2 and had no problems whatsoever ,by following the directions above ! Load the drivers in order listed as recommended ! One thing that should be noted thoe, and is not is that you should do all(or should say have to) your “WiNDOWS UPDATES” before loading any of the DRiVeRs from #6-9 ,as they require .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 or higher ,which if you try to load them they will notify you of that little fact ! Another side note is that i8kfan should be #10 on the list ,just for saftey sake ! ANYHOW,enuff of my shpeel ! I added another gig of RAM (2×1gig),with Vista running in the factory configuration and the thing was still pathetically horrible to use ! Now with 2 gigs of ram and XP this thing blows me away on the performance it offers for the price, totally amazed, and 1 happy camper ! AND finally and not to be overlooked ,,when you load XP you will see that there are 3 partitions on the hard drive ,,1 which will be the smallest and has sumthing like “qresore” or sumthing like that in ( ) beside it ,was F: in mine ,is the restore partition DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT delete that partition, just delete the other 2 and then load XP on the unallocated space . This will allow you to use your restore disk that you made or you can get from ACER ,to load VISTA in the factory craptactular configuration with all the applications back on it in the event ,you ever decide to ,,,(even thoe after experiencing the performance difference between XP and Vista ,God only knows why you would) ,but never say never ! XP will not notice this extra partition except for the fact that your DVD drive will now be E: instead of D: as it would if you deleted that partition ! OK,, Thanks again to all whom have posted here, and happy computing folks ,,and GOD BLESS !

@Anonymous:
I tried BIOS V 1.33….didn’t solver anything, and since I don’t know what changed I “flashed” back to 1.29a(don’t fix it it aint broken)
Andres.
March 27th, 2008 at 5:36 am
BIOS v. 1.33 released without any readme or changelog, only an exe.
Doesn’t show the current BIOS version and the update’s version.
It seems to me unsafe so I DON’T recommend this.
March 27th, 2008 at 5:18 am
@Andres
for me, it will NOT work…
March 27th, 2008 at 3:54 am
Man, it worked like a charm
Just bought an Acer Aspire 5315-102G16MI and installed XP on it using the slipstream method.
Not even a single error on installing anything works perfect.
Thanks for a very useful tutorial “Thumbs up”

Those files don’t prevent my Acer 5315 from overheating. I watched the cpu go to 60C before I turned the I8kfan to automatic.
Are there other people were it DID work?

To everybody with the heat problems:
BIOS update 1.32 does NOT solve it…I can’t believe Acer s*cks at solving this big problem. I just tested it but I had to turn on the i8kfan before my CPU started to burn again.
What did happen is that it installes a news driver for a ACPI device, didn’t figure out which one yet.
March 21st, 2008 at 12:50 am

Do you know what’s new in 1.32 ?

Thanks for your message….it’s what I was afraid of, are you using the tool I mentioned?
March 18th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
After copying the fils, and just before it finishes burning, this is what comes up!
“8448 The replication reference information for the target server already exists”
I can’t seem to find acer http://ftp.
March 18th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
hi all,
now, i update to v1.31 bios.
there is NO change to the sleeping mode / fan / temp. problem at all
means: the cpu will continue to overheat…
March 18th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
@Alice:
I just check the release file for the V1.31 BIOS but the don’t mention it anywhere. You could try it and let us now, but if I don’t have to update my BIOS I rather not do it. I found updating a BIOS pretty risky
March 18th, 2008 at 11:20 am
hi,
is this overhead problem solved with the new bios v1.31 that ist availible
at acer’s ftp?
March 18th, 2008 at 6:24 am
We have followed all the above instructions and keep getting an “8448 error” when trying to burn the disk any ideas?
Cheers Glen
March 17th, 2008 at 5:55 am
Many 5315 users says the acer’s power management software is required to turn on the fans when it’s resuming from suspend..
As we see, it’s enough to read the cpu temperature in i8kfan’s way.
The bad thing is in Linux, I put an ACPI temperature meter applet to panel, but it’s show false values and the processor is overheating. I hope it will fixed, I want to use Ubuntu with this machine. But it’s seems to me impossible, because of negligence of Ubuntu ACPI Team and Acer’s support.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:19 am
Great site! I solved all problem, good job maded here
THX!
March 17th, 2008 at 12:48 am
@ kikke:
That’s true, you CAN’T control it BUT if you put it on automatic you’ll see that you fan kicks in when the temp goes up to 45 ~ 50. I’m still enjoying it
The tool is for DELL notebooks, but for some strange reason it wakes up the fancontrol on the acer’s .
March 16th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
The i8kfan doesn’t controls the fan speed. Only read the CPU temperature. Maybe it’s enough to not overheat? I’ll try it.
March 15th, 2008 at 10:55 am
gooddddd
March 15th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I thought I had the heat problem fixed with the BIOS update to 1.29a, but a week ago it crashed on me again. I went out on the net and found THE TOOL to fix it. Download I8kfanGUI at http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html, install it, and have it start up during boot. I have been testing it for a week now, putting the 5315 on standby and taking it out of it many times without a crash! The program shows the cpu temp and controls the fan when it needs to. I finally can enjoy my notebook and put it on standby as many times as I want to.
Good luck to all of you downloading and installing it!
Andres
March 15th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I upgraded my 5315 to XP and all drivers work great. I also changed the Celeron M 530 for a C2D T7300, and it runs nicely on 800FSB (even though the chipset is only supposed to go to 533). I also changed to hard disk for a faster 7200rpm version, a Hitachi HTS722010K9SA00 100GB, and that really made a difference! It almost has double the read and write speeds, and everything is much more responsive.
The only problem I’m having, like everyone else here, is the overheating issue after standby. And thats a bummer.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:26 am
For XP SP3. If PCI Device don’t work, you can try:
1.- Download kb888111xpsp2.exe from Microsoft and unpack with winrar.
2.- Manually install the driver with device manager.
3.- Install Realtek audio driver of this site.
Now, Ive sound.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:36 am
Worked like a charm.
A shedload of virtual beer is on me.
Thanks.

# Jehad Says:
February 28th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Hi,
I purchased an Acer Aspire 5315 model ICL50 for the Middle East market. Now your site has been of great help indeed since I preferred WXP SP2 to Vista and every WXP driver you provided worked except my only problem remains with the WIFI driver. I’ve used both Atheros and Broadcom and so far I just don’t seem to hit any success. The supplied Vista drivers CD also includes a Wifi driver for Intel, is there any chance that I should be looking for an Intel XP wifi driver instead?
Please sir, I need your help.
Many thanks in advance.
Jehad, Beirut, Lebanon.

i have same problem!
Drivers for this wifi dont work, comp model is ICL50….
any help?

Can i install WinXP sp2 on my Asus Z99Le with this prepeared CD or not?
March 9th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Hi again. back from austria and dying to try xp out on my laptop now.
I hit a roadblock early though.
nlite says that access is denied to “C:\xp-temp\HIVEDEF.INF”.
I did try another way though, that seems to work.
I change the SATA mode to “IDE” and then installed with a already modified xp-DVD.
It found all my partitions and so far my installation is going fine.
Is there anymore roadblocks that I might run in to?
March 8th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
update
after all these, you can install XP SP3. Sound is still there
March 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
I have the solution for the sound problem !
here the solution:
1. Install Win XP with SP2 !!!
Wiht Service Pack 3 you never find the drivers ! i don´t know why. but SP3 does not find it ( i testet with 10 different sound drivers and all different intel chip drivers ). No chance.
2. After Installing XP Sp2 install the intel_chipset_driver
3. Install Realtec sounddriver WDM_R181 ( or others . i did if with r181 and it woked)
4. Install intel_graphics_driver
5. isntall atheros_wireless
6. broadcom_ethernet_driver
then reboot.
7. now open device manager. install new driver for audio hd. You have to select the “all” folder from the intel_chipset_driver. ( after downloading and unzipping it, you have folder: “intel_chipset_driver/Intel Chipset/all
8. then install
thats it
no you have sound ….
greetings oli

When I first ran the setup for the sound drivers I had no sound. In Device manager, expand the system devices and see if there are any problem devices - in my case it was something to do with the voice modem - once I got the drivers installed for that it seemed to sort itself out and I had sound - Sorry can’t remember exactly what I did but I know this was where I started to solve the problem.

Again I would like to avail you to help me with my Acer 5315 2077. I have already installed win XP pro on it and installed all the drivers in the order you specified. Yet I still have no sound, I have tried several different audio and modem drivers to no avail. I would appreciate ANY help in this. Thank you.

I have not had any problems loading drivers, but I can’t seem to find the right driver for the ethernet controller. I am installing windows XP. Can anyone help. I have been to several sites and have tried many drivers to no avail. I am sure I am missing something simple. Thanks.

Great guide! I managed to do the following though. Under the BIOS “Main” menu, (on my model) amd change the setting under SATA (way down) and put it from AHCI to IDE.
hope it’ll help others. good luck

Just like to say thanks for this extremely useful guide - I’m not new to computers but have never done a slipstreamed install cd before.
Just to help others who may read this, I’ve established that the overheating problem is as a direct cause of this laptop supposedly not supporting XP. It would appear that various fixes may work depending on exactly which model you have - in my case, even updating to the latest BIOS of v.1.29a (only just released) didn’t fix the problem on its own. I was greatly amused when I spoke to Acer support and they denied any knowledge of an overheating problem with this pc - despite the fact that it is extremely well documented on the web - a quick google search will show that.
So what did I do to solve it - as I say, I updated the BIOS to v 1.29a (only just released and ACER warn that the previous version of 1.29 may cause problems and shouldn’t be used.
Next, having tried every possible version of the Acer empowering software without success, I uninstalled all the Acer software.
The only third party software that worked was I8KfanGUI - magic, for the first time since I got the laptop (whether Vista or XP), the fan now cuts in and out as needed. My model is Aspire 5315 - 101G08MI

Dear all,
I have an Acer Aspire 5710 and have recently downgraded (although the performance is upgraded) to Windows XPx64 from Vista. I believe I have installed all of the original drivers (they weren’t particularly easy to find I might add and if it wasn’t for web blogs, I would be in a pickle) Everything is fine except for two things:
1) My resolution is stuck on basic and Acer’s (incompetant) technical support team say that they can’t help. I have tried to download the correct driver for my 15.4″ WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCD but windows will not let me install it.
2) My DVD RW drive can read and play DVD’s and CD’s but I can’t burn anything to disk.
Please can someone help me on this, it’s causing me much stress.
Many thanks.

Bob, here’s some insight on the audio topic…
March 6th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Now this is probabily off topic. This laptop doesn’t have Line input.
I need to grab some music and mic unput is not bad at all with all mic processing turned off, but it’s just a little “narrow” and little noisy, being a typpical microphone input.
First i ment to by some Express or USB card anyway, but now i like Realtek but have no Line-in.
And i need that line-in desperately, there is bunch of old vinyl / cassete etc, so is there any way to enable it in the Windows/Realtek mixer?
What i know is that it is fisically connected to “Mic” input of Realtek chip, not the “Line” one (dot’t ask me how i know).
Anybody?

I have the Acer 5315 2077 wuth a fresh win XP pro install, I have everything working except sound and I think the cpu fan. I made sure to install all the drivers in the order you specified, yet no good. Any ideas?

Noob — What I did was remove the stock hard drive and install another (much larger) drive in it’s place and installed xp to that. I’m keeping the vista drive in case I ever have to send the machine in for warranty service. New drives are cheap and easy to install, requiring only a small phillips screwdriver to open the drive access door, and transfer the mounting frame from the original drive to the new one.

noob - I would not like to be responsible if your laptop breaks, so my answer to you is you need to decide for yourself whether you wan to try again. I found when I switch off aero and most of the other fancy but useless additions, Vista would run reasonable fast (as a barebone installation). Installing Windows XP by itself will not break your computer but it may have an impact on your warranty should something go wrong in the process.

Gerry - sounds like an ISP problem rather than a laptop fault. Some email provider (or ISP’s) don’t allow you to send emails unless you are connected to their service, only receive emails is allowed.

My only problem is e-mail , can receive but not send mail when I am away
from my home ?oe 6. any thoughts ?

pet2000 - i did do that, eventually. but i find vista annoying (and very, very visually pleasing - i must admit it). it’s hard to keep searching for the RIGHT version of bsplayer (i have’nt found one that doesn’t make my laptop go “yooo, what’ you doing??? you know that using that version is extremely damaging to my self-esteem!!!” and by that i mean that it turns off certain features, such as aero or… other such stuff) and each program i try to install. i won’t even go into games, which is another soft spot for my computer.
so… i’m gonna give it one more try (could this damage my laptop beyond repair? if the answer is yes, i guess i’ll have to learn to live with vista)… i know how to do the “install xp” part, i just don’t know which drivers i need and where could i get them from…
but if you still think that it wouldn’t be wise for me to do it, i guess i’ll drop it. for now, at least
March 3rd, 2008 at 6:17 am
noob - have you got a backup copy of your original software which came with your laptop? If yes, I suggest you re-install it and do not attempt to install a different version. You really need some computer knowledge to do that. The instructions here are only for the Acer 5315 and may not work for other models.

Fiast - I can confirm that if you make the backup DVDs before you start with anything else, you will be able to reinstall everything, including Vista and all trial software to factory setting even after you have used Windows XP or Linux. You do not need to delete the backup partition on your hard disc (probably called F:\) to install Windows XP. All you need to do is to delete and reformat the C:\ partition during XP installation, leave everything else as it is. But remember when you use your backup DVDs to set your laptop to factory settings, you will loose all data on your C:\ partition, so it is better to create a further partition during XP installation (e.g. D:\) where you can copy files and keep them safe when you reset your laptop as the reset will only delete C:\ partition and not D:\ or any additional partition. Hope this answers your question.

Hi there!
I have recently installed an XP SP2 on a ACER 5720z using the drivers you recommended, in IDE HDD mode. The only problem that appears was that on every 1-2 minutes the processor it’s going wacky and stalls for about 5 secs.
Does this happens because I did the installation in the IDE mode?
I will try the CD Burner method for the AHCI !
Where can I get some XP drivers for my Bluetooth? When I try to install the drivers that comes with my laptop it says that it’s for Vista only…
Thanks!

@Fiast
Epower works for me. Not everything you have or used to have in Vista will work, but i’ve got Powermanagement and Settings running.
I myself just made the two DVD’s, but I can’t tell you if everything will restore to factory settings. I guess it’s a risk you take, but it’s worth it!
Ciao,
Andres.

I prefer windows xp on this laptop. just like it mentioned change ur boot sequence boot from ur cd rom and install the windows xp. after your done install those drivers in order. some reason my touchpad menu doesnt show or anything so i have tapping on. no way to turn it off

Cool, thanks Danilo.
I figured as much, as I said, I’ve seen this before.
We’ll probably have to do the same thing with this one.
Again, thanks for the hasty reply!

About Extended monitor:
Since it worked and then it wouldn’t, i concluded the only thing could be some BIOS or VGA (inaccessible) BIOS change; so i just restored the defaults in.
And Extended monitor options reappeared!…?
Instantly i remembered Geezer’s S-video problems:
http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/installing-windows-xp-professional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/#comment-18327
So, if anyone have similar situation that something works and then it doesn’t, try loading the BIOS defaults.
p.s. This 7-pin S-video connector should have composite video-output too. If it does not works, then pins 1 and 2 are ground and 2,3 are Luminance and Color. To get normal TV picture, take the the signal from Luminance out and put a 470pF capacitor between Luminance and Color.
If someone interested i can explain in detail

hello, i have an acer 5610z. i’ve tried installing windows xp on it, but i’ve repeatedly failed at it. this is my fourth time trying and i thought to myself that it might be time to write you guys in order to get some help.
the last time i tried it, i installed a wrong driver and the computer started freezing at the starting “miscrosoft windows xp” image, so i’m really worried right now that i might mess up my computer (apparently, there IS harm in trying). consequently, i won’t install anything on my machine before i get an “all clear” from you.
ps: this link http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5610z.html won’t work for me (internet explorer cannot display the webpage), don’t know why. oh, and i’m writing from a different pc, as i can’t surf the web with my gloriously nonfunctional laptop.
oh, and i’m a novice (if you haven’t figured that out yet), so please be gentle.

Ostar,
my notebook is an acer aspire 5315-2142. I`ve installed windows xp and I`m using the same driver you`ve mentioned and I’m not having any problem with my LAN internet connection/ping or ip.

Hi,
I purchased an Acer Aspire 5315 model ICL50 for the Middle East market.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to give a “heads-up” and possibly get some insight:
I work at a local, small-buisness, computer shop and I have successfully installed XP over Vista on numerous 5315’s (and many, many other brands of laptops/desktops, heh) of varying sub-versions and almost all of them have been a breeze. I also almost always use the AHCI->IDE trick to get XP to see the HDD and havn’t had any bouncebacks/issues (yet! /crossfingers).
But I just recently ran into a road-block with a 5315-2142:
After installing all of the XP drivers successfully (no splats in the device manager), I come to find out that the notebook will not browse the internet or ping any sites/IP’s when using the LAN (note: the WLAN can browse/ping just fine…).
The drivers that have been installed (and reinstalled, multiple times, multiple different ways) are the broadcom ones labled “Lan_BCM5787_v10.26.0.0_XP”.
Also, I found an interesting “bug”:
When the local area connection (the broadcom LAN connection) is set to automatically get it’s IP address from the router (DHCP), it will -allways- pull “192.168.0.97″….allways….regardless of what router/switch it’s plugged into and regardless of what that router’s settings are.
Example: When I plug this notebook into a router that is set to assign IP addresses in the range of, say 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100, it will STILL pull 192.168.0.97……….
But when set to a static IP address (manually assigned IP), it will connect and browse/ping just fine (if the static IP is in the range allowed by the router).
The only problem with leaving the setting static is that the customer will (more than likely) not be able to change/know the settings to set this to if they ever take the unit somewhere with a router accepting/assigning different IP settings.
I did try using both a winsoc fix and running a full dial-a-fix scan/reset, just to make sure the windows software wasn’t hosing me…easily proven by the fact that it can browse/ping with the wireless but I just wanted to really, really make sure.
Any ideas?
I’ve ran into this problem once before in the last 4 years on an Asus laptop, about a year ago. I ended up sending it back to Asus, and even they couldn’t figure it out. In fact, after sitting on the phone and explaining the situation (and how to reproduce the error) to one of their techs for about an hour, I gave up. The guy kept saying “It work fine here!, must be you network!!!”…….so they sent it back to us with a bios-flash (lol), which didn’t do a thing. We ended up selling it for about half of what we paid, as a “B-stock, no warranty available” unit. :’(

-How do you guys make extended monitor configuration? I only see “Clone” option. I deed it only once, it was good, but no mather what resolution etc i cant repeat it now.
Second monitor connected, all in place…
