Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop

This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.

We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:  English flag French flag Portuguese flag Russian flag Spanish flag

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.

UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).

You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.

You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.

These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.

NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.

If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.

The Floppy Method

First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.

Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip

Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”

Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.

In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.

Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.

Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.

The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.

After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.

We recommend installing drivers in this order:

  1. Realtek HD Audio Driver
  2. Intel Chipset Driver
  3. Intel Graphics Driver
  4. Atheros WiFi Driver
  5. Broadcom Ethernet Driver
  6. Launch Manager
  7. Touchpad Driver
  8. Acer Empowering Framework
  9. Acer ePower Management

Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.

The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.

We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).

Internet and CD burner Method

The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.

First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)

Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\

Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.

Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.

On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”

On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.

On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.

On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.

Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.

After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.

On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.

Finally, click Burn.

Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.

Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.

After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.

Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.

Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.

Modifying the BIOS Settings

Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.

You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.

You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”

Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.

Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.

On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.

Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method

Modem Driver Installation

Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.

The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.

  1. Click on your “START” menu
  2. Right click on “My Computer”
  3. Click on “Properties”
  4. Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
  5. Click on “Device Manager”
  6. Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
  7. Click on “Update Driver…”
  8. Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
  9. Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
  10. Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
  11. In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
  12. Click on “Have Disk…”
  13. Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
  14. Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
  15. Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.

You should now have a working modem.

YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

It’s like I knew what the answer was but had no idea where to get it from. And you were like my prayers answered. My Acer Travelmate lap would not tap the CDRW and hence I could not install my Windows XP on the linux it came preinstalled with. Then I came over here, studied the BIOS modification option and now as I type this my windows XP professional is being installed. Bless you tons. You ROCK

Ok, nevermind. I went to acer’s website and installed newer updates of touchpad drivers. Now I am set! Thanks soooooooo much for this site. I have been saved!

    Alaina Says:

First off, thank-you everyone who has put so much effort and work into getting this to work! I recently bought my Aspire 5315 and tried out vista for over 6 months. I had issues, but most were networking/internet problems, they went away (unsure how) but recently I started getting (not working) responses from every application. I had wanted to “rollback” since I bought the dang thing, but I didn’t know where to start, so I never bothered. I knew there had to be a way! So after one quick google search I found this site. Who knew so many people with this model (it’s really popular I guess!) wanted what I did!!! So, I have everything working now, except my scroll button does not scroll! Touchpad Detect doesn’t seem to be responding. It successfully detects my touchpad, then when I go to install it gives me this error:

    runtime error ‘53′
    file not found.

    is there something I’m missing?

My other mouse buttons work fine. But it seriously is annoying.

SP2 doewsn’t work either same thing. I will have to put crappy vista back on as it is my wifes laptop and she doesn’t like ubuntu. I was thinking about windows 7 build 7077, but my utorrent has stopped working for no apparent reason so vista will have to do.

If anyone finds a solution to this let me know. A word of warning for those considering this, make sure you have the ability to put it back to vista before you try it or you may end up with a brick. It obviously works often, but not all the time. It has worked on some 5315-201G08Mi models but not mine

  11. 1490
    Trent Says:

Well, I have tried flashing the bios, but I can’t get it to work. Al the infor I have on that is old an poeple in threads talk about upgrading to version 1.25. My 5315-201G08Mi is at version 1.29, so I doubt this is the problem anyway.

BTW version 1.34 is the most up to date insyde bios for the 5315.

For the moment I have just chucked Ubuntu Hardy Heron on, but apparently there are issues with wifi and sound.

The only thing I can think of is that the windows disk I used was already at SP3, I will try with SP2 and see if that work better.

    Cheers all

  12. 1489
    Trent Says:

A minor improvement. I took the battey out and put it back in again and now it is back to blue screen of death during the ‘applying computer settings’ page

I found the post above about the bios flash any more updates on a better way to do it than using Win98. I sure has hell don’t have a copy of that!

  13. 1488
    Trent Says:

    Chukay

“How do i get the laptop to boot from the CD? i have enabled the F12 key and made the ATAPI the first boot source but it still doesn’t work.”

This may be a patronising suggestion but you have to tap F12 as soon as the computer starts to access the boot menu. Then select the ATAPI drive.

  14. 1487
    Trent Says:

Like Ron above I too have the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!

I followed the CD based instructions above exactly. Windows installed to the reboot point then after seting up the screen resolution it crashed with blue screen of death. It auto rebooted and it got a little further this time but then again with the blue screen. Third time same thing.

In frustration I just left it and went for a run. Came home and switched it back on and after a few initial boot up noises (cd tray and HDD for around 3 seconds) it powers itself off .

Looks like the whole thing is good and rooted now

As you seem to know what you are talking about, I have a teaser for you here.

I have a standard hardware (retail kit) Acer Aspire M3600 PC (not laptop). I have an OEM install disk of Windows XP Pro SP3 (genuine). When I try to use it, I get as far as the point when windoze tries to run the actual setup, and then all I get is the BSOD and the PC locks up and I have to perform a hard reboot with the power button.

All the advice you have given here is relating to Win XP Pro SP 2, shouldn’t the SP3 version of the Windoze unstall OEM disc be even easier.

I await eagerly for any advice you may be able to give as to get Win XP on this great machine with the crap OS on it.

Notebook Hardware control reported it running at 70 to 95 degrees. So I sent it back to Acer, who replaced the Thermal Module and cleaned the fan. I have a question….it is possible to connect acer 5315 to a panasonic tv?

    Chris Says:

Great to have all the drivers in one place, but there`s nothing wrong with runnng IDE mode and saying it risks corruption isn`t really true, its only a different mode of operation and only really works properly in vista anyway. Really no need to have to add drivers to an installation or use a floppy, before installing XP or on another computer create a driver cd with all the drivers your going to require (or use external storage eg usb stick, external HD etc, to hold your drivers while you get XP on), then install XP in IDE mode, next install your drivers from the cd you created. this “how to” is needlessly complicated but handy to have easy access to the drivers.

If anyone doesn’t have their XP disc BUT still has their Key code they can download the XP software from download.com under “operating systems”. I would suggest downloading, burning, labeling, AND (here’s the most important part) saving it.

I realize that I am coming in very late but I just couldn’t resist the urge of giving a VERY big thank you to Alex and all the rest of those who put this tutorial together. I have a 5315-2077 that WAS running Vista and I could stand that pig no longer. I read through this forum (yes all of it) twice and then followed the tutorial exactly as written. It was a flawless install. Two hours after beginning I was loading software. I now have a very fast, very nice laptop. Thanks again.

There’s another method, via boot sequence change
    1)change SATA to IDE and
2)change boot sequence so CD boots first then hard drive.
make sure to save BIOS settings and you should now be able to have your hard drive available to install WinXP.

I recently installed az Acer aspire 5715z notebook with Windows XP SP2-3, and take me about 1 month to find a working wireless WinXP driver for the integrated Broadcom Wifi card. I tried every driver even from this site, but none of them has worked. If anyone have the same problem Do this:

    # Right click on “My Computer”
    # Click on “Properties”
    # Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
    # Click on “Device Manager”
    # Right click on “Network Contoller” if wireless not recognized yet, or “BroadCom 802.11g” if you have allready installed a wrong driver.
    # Click on “Properties”
    # Click on “Details” tab
    # Here on down, you will find your DEVICE code something like this:
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_E003105B&REV_01\4&1B09A299&0&00E3
this is what you looking for so goto http://www.google.com :)
    and type:
    “windows xp driver 5715Z PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_E003105B&REV_01\4&1B09A299&0&00E3″

and you will be very close to your driver.
You can make sure before your driver is good for your notebook by looking for the driver *.inf file for the IC code example:
your IC code in Details is:
    PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_E003105B&REV_01\4&1B09A299&0&00E3
Then look for DEV_4315&SUBSYS_E003105B&REV_01 in the inf file.
If you find it, you can be 100% sure this driver is good for your wifi.
If not then its 99% that its not going to work with your wireless.

#Remove the card from your “Device Manager”
    #Run installer
    #Wait for installer to finish
#Let new hardware wizard do its job, and enjoy.

Hi, thanks a lot for the help I obtain from this forum, it was very helpful to me, I did make a downgrade in a Toshiba laptop, I only needed the audio driver, which I can find in your forum, the Toshiba model is: L305-S5865, and now I have everything installed on my computer under Windows Xp, again thanks a lot, and if anyone needs help wiht the drivers of this laptop, please be my guest and ask me fo it

For those of you that are in need of a SATA/AHCI Driver for ACER ASPIRE 5315 here is a direct link to the driver:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-54270-1&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en

this is the driver i used with nLite and it integrates fine and also is loaded without errors in a windows xp install for you to use your integrated hard drive in AHCI Mode..

    Hope that is helpful….

  93. 1408
    Craig Says:

may i also note that the drivers you have been so nice to provide us all with CAN be integrated into a custom xp installation using nLite and that also saves u time, the only drivers that didnt install were the Intel Graphics Card driver and the RealTek HD Audio driver, they were installed manually the rest were installed perfectly by Windows XP Setup and i even had wireless as soon as windows had completed installing…..

if you know a bit about pc’s and want a custom install disc, i recommend using nLite and aswell as just integrating the SATA AHCI driver integrate the rest of the drivers aswell.

brilliant to see someone out there loves XP as much as me and is willing to provide such detailed information…

    thanks again :D

Hey Guys, just wanted to let you all know that everything worked for the Aspire 5315-2077 except the modem driver. I went to Acer’s site and downloaded the Ambit Modem driver that’s listed for the Aspire 7720 for Windows XP…when you go to the download page, the 5315 is also listed. After hours and days of pulling my hair out over the stupid modem, I now have a complete working system running Windows XP! Woo-hoo!
