Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop
This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.
We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.
UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.
You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.
These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.
NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.
If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.
The Floppy Method
First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.
Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip
Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”
Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.
In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.
Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.
The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.
After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.
We recommend installing drivers in this order:
- Realtek HD Audio Driver
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Graphics Driver
- Atheros WiFi Driver
- Broadcom Ethernet Driver
- Launch Manager
- Touchpad Driver
- Acer Empowering Framework
- Acer ePower Management
Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.
The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.
We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
Internet and CD burner Method
The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.
First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)
Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\
Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.
Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.
On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”
On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.
On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.
On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.
Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.
After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.
On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.
Finally, click Burn.
Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.
Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.
Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.
Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.
Modifying the BIOS Settings
Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.
You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.
You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”
Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.
Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.
On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.
Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method
Modem Driver Installation
Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.
The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.
- Click on your “START” menu
- Right click on “My Computer”
- Click on “Properties”
- Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
- Click on “Device Manager”
- Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
- Click on “Update Driver…”
- Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
- Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
- Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
- In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
- Click on “Have Disk…”
- Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
- Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
- Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.
You should now have a working modem.
YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

Solved my missing audio problem this way: disabled and removed the Microsoft UAA audio driver (from System) then reinstalled the realtek audio driver as stated at the top of this forum. Without removing the MSFT UAA the realtek driver would always fail to install.

Thank you. This page has helped me on a number of occasions. I’ve been working on my laptop for about a month now. I’ve customized it JUST the way I want it, with Ubuntu and XP, as a dual boot.
The very last little problem I had to solve was how to turn off that damned mouse tapping, and after a frustrating wild goose chase, this was the one page I found with the appropriate driver. I also referred to this page extensively while installing XP.
I greatly appreciate the effort that went into making this. Thank you very much.

Is there another method to install winxp on an Acer aspire 5610 that has vista home pre installed?

HEY GUYS BIG THANKS FROM IRAN!
just wanted to contribute in this great job, as a thanks to alex and all others who helped me and others to make this machine work (especially Matt for Broadcom driver)
I have an Aspire 5315 and I tried both XP SP2 and SP3 and the result was:
THESE DRIVERS WORK FOR BOTH XP SP2 & XP SP3 (at least on Aspire 5315)
for my 5315, I used the listed drivers + Foxconn modem driver instead of Agere modem driver and Matt’s WLAN driver as the one and only working driver for BCM94311MCG, all other drivers work great (interesting is I even gave a try installing graphics driver from my 5315 CD but it messed everything up, even though it was newer than the one listed here, so my advice is that if you don’t have time for try and error just use what worked pretty well for others)
just in case you missed Matt’s comment, you can find tested and working (and virus free!) driver for BCM94311MCG here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ctxvypzdb3d
I hope this comment could help in any way

If I am unable to use either method because no working PC available with CD burner and no floppy, is it possible to do the installation directly from an XP SP2 disk and follow the prompts to delete partitions, etc and then install the above listed drivers?

Oh dear, now that I read my post I realized something:
Intel Chipset driver in the bundle is version 8.3.1.1009
Intel Chipset driver from Acer is version 8.3.0.1013
…….. Perhaps I’m a little dyslexic? My apologies, please disregard the last bit from my previous comment; the drivers in the bundle found on this website are more up to date than the ones from Acer.
Once again many thanks to Alex and everyone here for all their help, and remember: Always search for a solution to your problems in google first, chances are someone has already gone through the same problem as you and the solution to their problem has been posted!

Hello everyone! I was glad that I stumbled upon this website! It made me feel a lot more safe having the experience of all of you people handy so that I could kick the god awful Vista off of my Mom’s Aspire 5315-ICL50 laptop! For me, everything worked fine and I had to use the Foxconn modem drivers instead of the Agere drivers just as was mentioned by Alex Wells in the beginning of this website.
A million thanks to Alex and everyone who bothered to post their experience to help others like me to “upgrade” to Windows XP! yay!
Now I shall share my experience with you on updating the BIOS of this laptop.
A word of warning: DO NOT FLASH THE BIOS USING THE WINDOWS UTILITY!
You see, having read through all the comments here, it appears that there is an issue with the CPU fan not working after the laptop resumes operation from standby. Some people mentioned two programs that can control the CPU fan and thus saving you from having to use Acer’s crappy bloatware. But I decided to give the latest BIOS from Acer a try and see if fixes this issue…..
Having never had a BIOS update fail on me before (and I’ve done at least a dozen before), I downloaded the Flash BIOS utility from the Acer website and confidently ran it on the laptop after I finished installing Windows XP …… oh boy, an error message shows up and says error something or the other …… now the keyboard stops working ….. I try to shutdown the laptop but the mouse cursor just gets stuck on “hourglass” mode …… so I had to unplug the AC power and remove the laptop battery …….. and now the laptop is totally dead! OH NOOOOOOOOOO! I swear I felt such despair, as if someone just died in front of me!
After I calmed down and asked God himself for help, I searched in google (on another computer of course) about “My Acer Aspire 5315 won’t turn on at all” and I eventually ended up here:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=27601
Thanks to their help and the little BIOS file they provided (I had to “join” this board in order to download the file) I managed to bring the laptop back to life! hooray!
But of course, the BIOS still isn’t updated, so I went here:
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5315.html
And in the “Bios for MS Windows Vista” drop down box, I downloaded v1.43.
Funny how the Acer Pan America website only has the v1.34 BIOS ….
THIS time I flashed the BIOS through DOS using bootable CD that used the image of a modified Win98 Bootdisk. I say modified because I had to remove emm386.exe from the autoxec.bat file in order for the flash utility to work, because when emm386.exe was included, the flash utility gives you an error and refuses to start.
Finally, the BIOS was updated to the latest 1.43 version and I am happy to report that the issue with the cpu fan not working after coming back from standby was resolved! I tested this by making the laptop go to standby, then bringing it back to operating mode, then leaving the laptop on overnight (don’t worry, in the power options I set it so that it wouldn’t go on standby). When I came to see it in the morning, it was still on and fully operational! it didn’t shut off!! YEEEEEAAAAH!! Now we don’t even need to use one of the two CPU fan controlling softwares! And now my Mom has a perfectly fine Windows XP laptop! …..joy.
One last thing, the Intel Chipset driver that is posted here in the 45MB bundle is a little older than the one available here on the Acer Pan America website:
http://www.acerpanam.com…ctedIndex=1
(You need to select “Laptops”, then “Aspier 5315″)
The one in the bundle is version 8.3.1.1009 while the one from Acer is version 8.3.0.1013. I used the one from Acer and it worked fine.
As for the rest of the drivers in the bundle, they are either newer or the same as the ones from Acer.
Okay, enough babling. I hope that this was helpfull and be careful when flashing the BIOS! Don’t use the windows utility!

Thanks a lot Alex Wells!!! Great job, saved my Acer to work with XP. Doing a great job, thanks again:)

sorry for the second post in a row but i’m wondering if maybe the missing network controller driver is teh problem for the wifi not working?
October 18th, 2008 at 9:32 am
i have a 5315-ICL50 and when i try to install the wifi drivers for XP it says that i need to connect my device and try again cause it cannot detect a plugged in device. the only problem is….ITS INTERNAL! after installing all your software listed way above this comment and having the same problem. and repeating it. and still having the wifi card problem. i’m just about giving up on Vista to XP i need your help!!!

Alex, I am glad you keep your eye on this thread.
I would like to add another detail to my previous report. Before killing Vista, I copied the DRV folder, with native drivers (some of them were more recent than posted here, no wonder - I purchased my new laptop only four days ago). So, I have a collection of these drivers, just in case (if anyone needs). But later on I realized that it is not very important, since the Windows Update website was able to recognize the obsolete hardware drivers and install the newer ones.
Best wishes. (I am writing from Portugal, btw).

Bye Bye VISTA crap … Hi beloved XP (hard to imagine microsoft produced it)
Anyway A BIG HAND FOR THESE GUYS EVERYONE.
You are the best

Many thanks, Alex Wells, for a very detailed tutorial and for the collection of drivers. Used CD method here and update from Vista to WinXP run smoothly. THANKS
My PC exact model is 5315-1A2G25Mi.
The only small problem was with the Agere modem driver. WinXP would not install it automatically, because it is not digitally signed (according to what Windows says). But manual installation of this driver worked OK. Later on, after doing Windows updates, in the “custom” mode, one hardware update was suggested. This was exactly Agere modem driver, which was successfully updated from the Windows Update website.
@ luke: standard WinXP installation does not recognize AHCI. In order to make it work, you need to use nLite and slipstream the necessary drivers to you Windows installation CD. How to do it - is described in a very detailed way at the top of this page (CD method, nLite).
… I wonder if anyone still reads these comments…

Re Installing Windows XP Professional w/SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315 Laptop. (Australia)
Your instructions are spot on … I initially had a problem setting up the CD but then decided to use the Floppy method. No trouble at all.
Anyone interested in using the advice on this subject, take it nice and slow and read the instructions properly and you will not have any problems.
Many thanks guys. Keep up the good work. I will make a donation soon.

Hello there mate, just wanted to thank you for this, it was driving me mad how slow this laptop was running with Vista! Why oh why put such a resource guzzling OS on such a low spec machine. Ah well, all sorted now. Had a couple of problems getting wireless to work, tried again making another xp disc with all the drivers rather than just the slipstream ones, then the sound stopped working and I had to find the PCI device in device manager and manually locate the drivers, but with a bit of jiggery pokery got this all done in a couple of hours, and now I’m actually enjoying using the laptop. Also had fun having a play around with nLite, it’s a good app.
Cheers for the guide, you’ve made my day
Fred, Shottz.

When I insert the nlite preped disk into the drive on my 5317-2077, it reads blank — as do ALL XP cds. Any idea how to get around that stickly little note, since the notebook won’t boot from a blank disk.
October 7th, 2008 at 9:28 am
I am having the same problem that is expressed above by Cis on or around Sept 10th. I do not see any responce to his problem but I hate to ask the same question twice.
I have followed the floppy method on 6 of these acer aspire 5315-2153 on each one of them as soon as you format the drive it is saying:
—-insert the disk labeled:
—-Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver
—-into drive a:
—-Press ENTER when ready.
Any ideas I am at a dead end.

thanks for the brilliant tutorial, everything went smoothly but i’m a bit unsure about the overheating issue.
I’ve installed the acer software and the i8kfan software and the cpu temp goes to about 68 to 71C.
Is this ok or is it getting too hot ?
Do i need to configure or change any settings in the i8kfan software.
thanks for any help.

I just got an Acer Aspire 5315-2856 and did not like Vista! I bought a Seagate 320 GB 7200 rpm HDD and replaced the OEM Toshiba 120 GB 5400 rpm with it. In the BIOS I changed the drive type to IDE and booted from the DVD-CD drive with my Windows XP+SP2 disc. Installed SP3 and then installed each of your drivers in the order you suggested directly from Windows XP using the extracted zip files you provided. However, I did not use your
Atheros driver
Broadcom driver
Launch Manager
Touchpad Driver
Before I replaced the Toshiba drive, I copied the following folders to a removable USB drive:
Acer
book
DRV
Windows
I pointed the “Found New Hardware” window to those files, which installed the drivers.
I really appreciate the effort you made in providing the drivers.
Take care.

Hi, I ve installed xp sp3 on my 5310 that came with vista and I can t get the memory card reader to work. Everything is fine except for this one.I have tried several drivers for it, and nothing. Anyone found any solution, please?
September 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
[…] There is also a website out there that deals with installing XP onto the 5135-2153. Included is drivers and a massive followup of comments (1000+) of installation success and woes. Some people with my model of laptop, report that some of the drivers do not work. Using this as a rough guide, I downloaded the drivers off of Acer’s website, scavanged for the ones that were missing or simply didn’t work, and dove in head first. […]

sorry for my rush, the model is acer aspire 5715z. (not 5175z)
also the everest ultimate program says that audio adapter model is: Realtek ALC268 @ Intel 82801HBM ICH8M - High Definition Audio Controller
Thanks again.
September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
i followed the method described above and installed windows xp on acer aspire 5175z. I installed all the recommended drivers in the method and it works fine (thank you
), but there is a problem with the sound card I guess. It produces scratches and stretches the sound sometimes. It happens in winamp, windows media…so i think it’s not a problem with the player. Maybe with drivers. In some forums i was told that it’s because of the speakers for this model, but it happens when I put in another speakers too. Please if you could help me solve this problem, cause it’s really annoying. Thank you!

If your Acer notebook (5315) may be equipped with a wireless LAN card that works with a Broadcom WLan Driver v4.10.40.0. *802.11b/g*…download from the Acer site, the following driver bcm4312 -v4.170.25.12_XP_x32 25.12.
But be sure that your radio is activated.

Hi , I have Acer 5315 & found this page very useful for installing win xp.
I m not a techie, so i did not understand much of what i was doing as i blindly followed instructions step by step on this page & it worked excellent. all credits to the author of this page. However i still wonder which is better OS (high speed, less mem footprint, less battery consumption, …) for my Acer 5315, Win XP or Vista?? Can the experts please comment.

Ruto, thanks for the contribution!
Stephen, there have been reports of SP3 working fine with this tutorial… if you do a page search for “SP3,” you should find a few comments with info…
September 20th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Would this method and the drivers work for SP3? Or is it a SP2 exclusive method?

Update: I have been trying to install a working WiFi driver for this comp for a while now.. I keep getting “there is a problem” errors. The device is Broadcom 802.11g. I have downloaded and tried to install every driver I can find. There seems to be a large variation in driver package sizes. The one from the Acer site trys to install, but a window comes up and says the driver is unsigned, I press continue anyway.. the the installation finishs and says ‘Cannot Start This Hardware’. Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39). This happens over and over and I am not getting anywhere.. I really hope you can help.
Thanks
Randall

dunno what happened there, it just submitted in the middle of my sentence.. back to what I was saying..
And thanks for hosting all the drivers for this here as well. Acer’s site is just awful, some of the links don’t work, some of the archive files are corupt.. real nice support there.. not to mention that their tech supt line has no clue.

Hi Alex. I am currently working on this beastly issue on a friends computer. Glad I ran into your site with this method. I had actually already changed my bios to use ide and had installed WinXP Pro with no trouble, and didn’t realise that there would be any issues until I found your site. My biggest problem was finding drivers that worked on my machine which is a 5315-2326. I have read through most of this page but haven’t really seen an explanation as to ‘why’ I can’t just use the ide setting in the bios. You mention instability, but what exactly is the issue and what kind of symptoms would indicate I am suffering from ‘instability’? It seems to be working just fine so far.
I thank you in advance for your help in my personal case and very much for this whole page. It’s people like you doing what you do that makes things like changing OS on a comp like this possible.. thanks again!! And tha

Maslo, if you ask me I’d say you be just as well installing XP and installing server software on it… I’ve tried 2k3 and it did fine… maybe if you’re planning on sticking exclusively to MS server software 2k3 would be good, but even in that case I would say there would be nothing wrong with using XP in that case as well…. One of the first things I do after installing XP is switch the theme back to classic, so it even looks similar to 2k3, hehe…
