Installing Windows XP Professional SP2 on Acer Aspire 5315-2153 Laptop
This is for all of you who figured the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (which comes packaged with Vista) would make a great Windows XP Professional notebook, for only $348 + the cost of windows… and then realized you had problems.
We have been receiving a large number of visits from folks with non-English-speaking configurations. As a convenience to visitors, we are offering a machine translation of this tutorial powered by N2H and Google Language Tools:

There are two methods for getting this to work, one only requires the internet, a few minutes, and a CD burner. The other requires a USB floppy drive.
UPDATE: We’ve got a working modem driver now. Check out the tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
You’ll probably also need a USB thumb drive for either method, and of course your copy of WinXP.
You may have already tried to install WinXP on this notebook. With the BIOS set to it’s defaults, the WinXP install disk can’t even see it’s Hard Drive, and if you set the hard drive to a non AHCI mode in the BIOS (such as native emulation), you are increasing your risk of data corruption, and at the same time reducing your speed.
These two methods are the correct way to handle the situation, and result in no performance compromises.
NOTE: All data on the hard drive will be erased.
If you experience problems related to .DLL files, try DLLCentral.com for resources and downloads.
The Floppy Method
First we’ll explain the floppy method, as it’s the fastest if you’ve already got the floppy drive and a blank floppy.
Download the floppy creator from here: f6_floppy_maker.zip
Extract the executable from the zip archive, insert a blank floppy, and run the executable, following the prompts to create an “F6 Driver Floppy.”
Attach your USB floppy drive to the new Acer notebook.
In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
Now boot your notebook from your WinXP install disk. One of the first prompts once the screen turns blue is to hit F6 to use a driver floppy.
Hit F6, insert the driver floppy. Windows won’t really give you any prompt that you’ve done things right, it will just keep installing for a while. After some time, windows will ask you to pick which driver off of the floppy you want — you should choose “Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M).” Be sure to leave the floppy in during the install, as windows will periodically pull files off of it until the installation is complete.
The Windows installer will ask you to where you’d like install Windows XP… follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You may chose the “quick format” to speed things up.
After windows is done installing, you’ll need to install some drivers. Acer isn’t providing a driver set for WinXP on this notebook.
We recommend installing drivers in this order:
- Realtek HD Audio Driver
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Graphics Driver
- Atheros WiFi Driver
- Broadcom Ethernet Driver
- Launch Manager
- Touchpad Driver
- Acer Empowering Framework
- Acer ePower Management
Alternatively, you can download all of these (except for the last three) at once in a single 46MB zip file. Remember that these are specific to the Acer Aspire 5315.
The Broadcom drivers must be installed through the device manager, the rest have installation executables which should be used. Sometimes you have to have windows “Update Driver” on an unknown PCI device in order to get the Realtek to work.
We have a working modem driver. Check out the separate tutorial on getting it up and running (should be installed last).
Internet and CD burner Method
The second method is slightly more advanced, and intended for those of you who no longer have floppy drives of any kind. Or at least none of the USB kind.
First download and install nLite.
(Requires .NET Framework 2.0, you’ve probably already got that, but if nLite won’t run, download the .NET Framework)
Now download and extract the slipstream drivers to a folder like C:\Drivers-temp\
Insert your WinXP install disk, cancel out of the autorun if it pops up.
Start up nLite, click next on the splash screen. Tell it where your CD is. It will ask you to tell it where to cache the files at. You can just use a folder like C:\XP-temp\ for that.
On the “Presets” screen, click Next again. Now click on the “Drivers” button, as well as the “Bootable ISO” button, then click “Next”
On the “Drivers” screen, click “Insert”, then “Multiple Driver Folder”. Point nLite to the location where you extracted the slipstream drivers, such as C:\Drivers-temp\ and then click OK.
On the “Select multiple drivers to integrate” window you’ll need to highlight the path at the top (such as C:\Drivers-temp\) by clicking on it once, then click “OK”.
On the “Driver Integration Options” window under “Textmode integration options” highlight the whole list by clicking once on the top item, then shift-clicking once on the bottom item. With that list still highlighted, click “OK” at the bottom.
Back on the “Drivers” screen, click “Next”. The “Apply Changes:” dialog should pop up, asking if you really want to start the process. Click “Yes”.
After the processing completes, you’ll need to click “Next”, at which point you’ll be taken to the final screen.
On the “Bootable ISO” screen, change the “Mode” drop down menu from “Create Image” to “Direct Burn”. Eject your WinXP disk, and insert a blank disk into your burner. For safety’s sake, put a check mark next to “Verify”.
Finally, click Burn.
Congratulations, you now have a proper install disk for the Acer 5315-2153.
Now you’ll need to boot your laptop from that disk. In order to be able to boot from the CD, we’ll first need to make a couple of quick changes in the notebook’s BIOS. Click here for instructions on modifying the BIOS settings.
After it gets started, windows installer will ask you where you’d like to install Windows XP to: follow the prompts to delete all the current partitions, then follow the prompts to create a new partition, and install Windows XP to that. You can chose the “Quick Format” to speed things up.
Follow the rest of the prompts to windows in the usual fashion.
Next, use the following drivers to get all your hardware set up, since Acer is providing only Vista support on this notebook so far.
Modifying the BIOS Settings
Shut the notebook completely down. Now turn it back on, and as soon as the Acer screen comes up, hit the “F2″ key to enter the BIOS. Navigate to the second page of the BIOS (titled “Main”) by pressing the right arrow key.
You may wish to turn of “Network Boot” by selecting it with your arrow keys and hitting enter, then changing it to disabled. This is often used in a cluster-lab environment, and for normal users only slows down your boot process.
You must now turn on the F12 Boot Menu by selecting it with your arrow keys, hitting Enter, and changing it to “Enabled”
Now switch to the “Exit” page, and hit Enter to “Exit Saving Changes”. The BIOS will ask you to confirm, tell it “Yes”.
Now the notebook will reboot, and you must hit F12 to boot from your CD.
On the “Boot Manager” screen, chose the second option which should be an ATAPI drive, such as a DVD-RW or CD-RW, highlight it with your arrow keys and press Enter.
Back to the Floppy disk method
Back to the Internet and CD burner method
Modem Driver Installation
Extract the Agere modem drivers zip archive somewhere on the Acer notebook.
The links in this list go to step-by-step screenshots! Full album here.
- Click on your “START” menu
- Right click on “My Computer”
- Click on “Properties”
- Click on the “Hardware” tab at the top
- Click on “Device Manager”
- Right click on “Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus”
- Click on “Update Driver…”
- Click on “No, not this time.” Click Next.
- Click on “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).” Click Next
- Click on “Don’t Search. I will choose the driver to install.” Click Next.
- In the list on the “Hardware Type” page, highlight “Modems”. You may have to scroll down. Click Next.
- Click on “Have Disk…”
- Click on “Browse” and navigate to where you extracted the Agere Modem drivers. Highlight the “agrmdv32″ file and click Open. Click OK.
- Highlight Agere Systems HDA Modem. Click Next.
- Click Yes on the “Update Driver Warning” dialog.
You should now have a working modem.
YMMV, if these drivers don’t work, try using the Foxconn drivers.

When I try to install the touchpad driver, I get “run-time error 76″ after it detects it and I click install. Any help is greatly appreciated, or any other alternative driver I could install so I could turn off the annoying tapping while typing feature. Thanks!

Thanks for you reply Alex, I did read the comments above, but all the check boxes are greyed out so can’t change anything, the image that is in the main screen is OK, it is just the captured image that is upside down
September 9th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Steve Dudley - there is a checkbox to fix that, search the comment thread (discussed towards the top I think)… anyway let us know if that fixes it.
past bedtime, i’ll take a glance @ other comments soon

G’Day,
I am attempting to load XP on an Aspire - 5315-301G12Mi (Australian Model) bought from JB HiFi this week.
All works fine except for the webcam, I can seem to get it working with the Bison software, does not appear to load the drive, seems to be using a generic M$ driver, and when I run the Crystal Eye software it seems to run but does nothing, when I attempt to enter settings option it crashes the software.
Any ideas

Pete — Could you specify which file and the name of the trojan? It’s almost certainly a false positive, that’s the first report of it on here… looks like there are reports on Google of false positives with nLite… http://www.google.com/search?q=nlite+false+positive

Do I have to install nlite on a windows xp machine in order to slip stream it, I am getting errors… its stalling when I install it on windows vista, and it asks for the source disk, and I it takes 3 hours to copy the files from cd to hard drive / and then it says scanning and been doing that all night .. any suggustions.. please email me at gmail.com

I’ve built, rebuilt, and reformatted hundreds of machines, and have seen these kind of driver issues on numerous occasions. Normally, it’s a hunt to find all the right drivers, but eventually, it all gets worked out.
This page changed all that…. at least for these Acer systems. We bought a handful of these guys for our remote locations, but had fits with the existing Vista install. The decision to install WinXP on these was made, but the support from Acer was non-existent.
I have to say, this is probably THE BEST page I’ve ever seen with a collection of drivers for a particular system. It is well laid out, easy to follow… and best of all, the links work!
Thanks for saving me untold hours in hunting the right drivers down!

Not really on my end. But after using nLite to integrate the drivers as suggested on this blog the SP3, XP found the disk and installed correctly.

You guys do realise that windows XP is now available with SP3.. which will recognise the newer hard drives at install time without any fuss using floppy based drivers.
The XP drivers can easily be loaded onto a USB key or even burned to a CD ready for installation after the XP install completes.

tom - looks like marcus has a suggestion for you… And actually.. now that he brings it up I should point out that these instructions are for Retail/OEM copies of WinXP Professional SP2… is that what you are using? it should also work with various other things, but obviously if you are having issues..
marcus - interesting, the mx 7 guys must have stripped something important from the install disk. glad you got it working w/ SP3 though!
Bracken - no problem, anytime.
August 21st, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Thanks again, I did as you said and more and my wireless is working great now, problem is, i’m not sure which thing fixed it so it will remain a mystery…. i won’t loose sleep over it.

i have an acer aspire 5315, i have done everything suggested but no luck.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:59 am
Tom - Do you have an Acer Aspire 5315-2153? Since audio didn’t work, and you followed the same steps as everyone else, I’ll have to assume the answer is no. So if not, what -do- you have? You probably won’t get much help without providing at least that much information…
Jeremy - Dan’s right, I certainly used another PC to make my own install disk. You’ll be fine, assuming thing HDD is OK (you never know, it could be a lemon).
Bracken - Glad it worked… as to the other other question, a Google search turns up this thread with quite a few suggestions:
http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=230280
including running Windows Update, ensuring that WPA-PSK/TKIP is set rather than WPA-Radius, ensuring that all the clocks are set correctly (you’d be surprised how many things get upset about incorrect time these days). Although the helpful guy keeps saying “Windoze” which should have died along with “kool”.. anyway have you already tried those suggestions? I’ve never run into the issue in question before.
August 21st, 2008 at 1:36 am
Hi Alex, you did wonders, my girlfriends acer aspire 5315-2153 laptop was a mess with vista, slow, awkward and unreliable. Your guide was just what i needed. And it worked out perfectly for me thanks to you.
I installed all the drivers and updated them as much as I could but I was left with one problem that I cant seem to fix. The wireless card picks up the signal from my router but as I try to connect it says “unable to find a certificate to log you to the network”. I know my router is fine because i am working off my own laptop as I type and theres no problems. Ive never come across this before and was hoping you might be able to help. Thanks mate.
August 21st, 2008 at 12:25 am
Jeremy — doing the burning on another computer should be totally fine, wiping the computer and starting fresh with this tutorial is advisable…
August 20th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Hi, I have a problem. Before stumbling on your site, I tried to install XP on my friend’s Acer Aspire 5315-2153. I changed the SATA to IDE mode, which I know you advise against, but I did it before reading this. I then deleted the partitions and installed XP in a new C: partition. Everything went smoothly and XP booted up and I went through all the steps and there I was at a clean desktop. I restarted it (I had not installed any drivers yet), and it loaded back up and then came to a screen that said XP did not shut down properly. And it gave me the options to choose to start normally or in safe mode. I chose normal and it just restarted the computer. Then I chose the others and they just restarted my computer also. I can’t get back into windows, and I don’t have a USB floppy. Will the burner method still work if I do all the burning on another computer? Or is there any other way to get past this? Thank you.

I have followed everything step by step and managed to get everything to work apart from the PCI Device. It still says that the device is unknown. I have tried to install Realtek audio driver first and then intel chip driver and doing it throught device manager but still no luck, it just says no software was found. So i currently have no sound.
could anyone please offer any help. i would really appreciate it. please.
Regards

Brandon - sounds like you skipped the step where you modify a BIOS setting or two… did you read this bit?
http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/installing-windows-xp-professional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop/#bios
Chris Nash - really? weird… I haven’t seen that behavior. maybe someone else can chime in if they’ve seen it, or you could elaborate if there’s anything else we might need to know?
Wojciech Przybylski - Which notebook do you have?
Boss - please don’t make spelling mistakes on purpose, it makes senior internet users hate you.
Adriaan - sounds like it is working but something else is up, like you have no DHCP server or something. Can you try manually setting an IP address that fits with your network, and see if that works? what sort of network are you hooking up to with the Ethernet cable??
AGAM - do you have WinXP installed already, or are you working with Vista? It seems like you should be able to install the drivers from this page if you are using WinXP, or the drivers from Acer’s site if you are using Vista:
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5315/vista/Drivers/
Szatansky - how about you shorten the question by about 75-80% please.. heh. I’m having trouble following all of that.
fulla - no doubt, glad it worked!
Ron Oliva - XP doesn’t have drivers for the southbridge’s SATA controller when using it’s default AHCI mode. Actually XP MCE -does- have those drivers, which is why you see a lot of late-model notebooks which had SATA + WinXP come with XP MCE instead of either XP Home or XP Pro… hope that answers your question reasonably well.
kim - to be honest, a beefy PC can run vista and it’s not too shabby.. but these notebooks really are not fast enough.
Rainie - I assume you have the intel GMA graphics, but I doubt it’s the GMA X3100… without looking it up, probably GMA 950? if so, use the intel utility. it works great for that.
Daniel Z. - we stay up all night so you don’t have to.. heh. anyway glad it helped you out.
Louanne S. - no problem, glad it went smoothly.

Hi, I’ve got an Aspire 4920 and i want to clone my external monitor but am only able to extend. the acer handbook says i can chose this setting in the Empowering section but i don’t have it for some reason. the laptop was Vista but i got XP loaded when i bought it, is this why i no longer have the empowering section? i know i’m supposed to.

thanks for the great how to on rolling back Vista to XP.
i do have a question. is the reason that Windows XP install disc cannot see the hard disc drive to install to beause it is SATA or is it because there is something in the BIOS that prevents this?

hello everyone…this is my story…ofcours I’ve got “5315″ with vista on it…I have tried internet and CD burner method as it is described by our good Alex above…and it works absolutely faboluous with my acer(Dear God bless Win XP and Alex)…when completely new XP appears with nice clouds, field and flowers in the back ground u want to dress it up a lettle bit…no back up CD’s
that’s the last time I made this mistake…so once again downloading and more downloading took weeks to get my old dress for my new XP…p2p programs start’s to sweat again…My favorite ARES ,his skin almost got red by it self after 104 hours downlading non stop no bulshit ;)…ofcours behind these serial numbers or cracks many diseases are hidden ,easy to catch sort of them…when enemy already past your NOD32 front lines and spyware doctors department of defense, even back up from Norton or Hitman pro are useless cause enemy already wreaking your system then u know that hand to hand combat it’s ON!If u can’t do much fightind in registry manually ,support from other generals on forums is absolutely necessary, it might work if enemy is not catching u off from internet by eating atheros and broadcom drivers even if u keep on going with instaling them all over again…then u know that’s about the time to surrender!…and here is my problem…10 min ago I have tried to reinstal my XP by useing the same copy of XP I’ve made with nLite following Alex’s instructions…yeas it’s starting ,it’s loading some files as usually on the beginning and then all u can see it’s black screen and cursor…it wont work after second try…ALEX!!!question for u I’ve made brand new copy but burned on the same CD-RW(still doesn’t work)meaby cause my win XP copy is with these drivers already on,I was wondering if nLite will tale me that the copy i’m tring to do already exist or ask me to replace them or something like that but it didn’t…what is happening then ,should I wait for my neighbour, lend copy of new XP and do the procedure once again ,burn it on blanc CD??will it help? or meaby my enemy took over the system and it’s controlling my every move and now I have to find somone to help and try something extremely difficult to fix that or meaby that’s something else…or meaby I change something in registry and that’s why??is that possible??BIOS is as it was before…
what do u thing Alex??Please HELP!!!

I tried to instal the realtel HD Audio Driver. To do this I installed on Windows XP SP2 the KB888111.exe and from informations I found in Internet the universal PCI device should be shown in Control Panel (devices), but it is not showned. Beside that I tried to update the devie driver but pressing the windows button “Update driver” does not work. Instlation of the above mentioned Realtek HD Audio Driver ends with information: ““Install Realtec HD audio driver failure”. it seems that I have the same problem as Boti. I tried to install the chipset driver first and also downloaded the driver from internet or tried to install that one provided with the laptop.
I tried to do the installation on Win Xp SP1, Win XP SP2 and Win XP SP3. For sure I found information that Win XP with SP is not supported. That whiy I should firts instal it on SP1 or SP2 and than upgrade to SP3.
Any clue what an be the reason ffor such strange behaviour?

I’ve installed XP and it works, but I’ve found that the audio and modem drivers will uninstall themselves periodically and for no reason, leaving me with no sound - and it’s often very difficult to reinstall them. Does anyone have any solution?

Hi, I did this method but in face of one problem. When booting from CD it will just continue onto windows vista login. The reason we wanted to format it and put XP on it in the first place as my wife forgot the password and now renders the laptop useless as admin is disabled.
I followed the steps to the letter and used a CD-RW copy, is this ONLY for windows xp professional since I’m using home edition. Any information would be appreciated

Thank you for the excellent site. It was very helpful in installing XP onto a Acer Aspire 4315-2535. I did have to find a few different drivers. One place that was almost no help was the Acer site. It is so slow. I finally had success going into the Acer Europe site. The computer is up and running, XP is very fast compared to Vista. Thank you for the good work. Besides running Vista, the computer had died during an install that hung, and it wouldn’t even restore to Vista. So I had to do something, and XP was the better way, anyway. I used the CD method, since I don’t have a floppy drive available. Very nice.

This whole process worked great with the internet and cd burner method, I performed it on my wifes laptop tonight and it worked great, her laptop is running so much better without Vista. Thanks so much to everyone who put the time and effort into all of this.
